Inbound Links and Directories

Whilst the overall design and optimisation of your webpages, along
with your domain name, has an effect on your search engine ranking
there is also one other important factor that many people overlook
and that is inbound links to your website.
The days of having a links page where webmasters simply swapped
their urls is thankfully behind us now and such a page is viewed
with disdain by most search engines who rarely give credit for such
an arrangement.
In links what the Search engines are seeking are oneway links to your
website that are relevant to the content of your site such as
Website Design in Oxfordshire This type of
link tells the search engine that this link will take them to a
source of information for a specific type of webpage. Simply entering
www.yourdomain.com tells the search engine
nothing about where that link takes you and consequently this will
not rate such a link with much importance whatsoever. In other words
such links should ideally be textual in their makeup. An example of
the html code required for such a link is below
<a title="The location to buy your widgets" href="http://www.thewidgetcompany.com">
For the best widgets visit widget engineering</a>
A link of this nature works very well with the search engines and
they can then index this link against a set of relevant keywords so
that your website comes up for appropriate searches. One little tip
though when writing those links avoid such words as "The Best" or
"Top" or similar as these phrases will only serve to penalise you in
your rankings as it is not for you to decide such merits and the
Search Engines are wise to it!
Another important factor is the pagerank of the sites that link to
you. The more important the webpage that links to your site the more
weight the link will carry as the search engines reckon that the
more important the website the more notice they should take of it.
Both Alexa and Google rank pages and page ranks can be
viewed either by visiting the
Alexa website (We would not recommend the Alexa toolbar) or
by using the Google
Toolbar.
As far as inbound links the adage is simply more (from good sources)
inbound links the better. Avoid, however,
paying for links as sites that will publish a link to your site for
a fee are often blacklisted by the Search Engines!
If you want to get an idea of how many other sites link to yours for
a given search engine simply go to the main search page for
that search engine (not using a toolbar) and type in your domain name
in apostrophes as below and click
"Search".

The search results page will show all the links to your site that
they have indexed and the total number is shown on the top right in
Google and Yahoo and above the results in MSN Search.
There are a number of ways to gain inbound links. The main ones are
listed below
 |
Posting to relevant
Bulletin Boards discussing topics appropriate to your website.
You can also include a link in your signature as well as in any
postings you may make |

Hit the news! If you have
done anything unusual or have something unique to announce then
try the news websites. Obviously a plug from the BBC will do you
wonders (and they usually publish links to websites as well) but
other smaller new sites such as your local paper's website are
always seeking things to write about |
 |
Feeder websites. These are
simple one page websites that can be about any thing relevant to
your business and usually located under SEO friendly domain
names. They can contain textual links to your website. We can
help you produce such sites for around £50.00 per site! - Just
